Hello everyone, Thank you for making this site available.  It is very useful since I am researching my Campbell ancestors from afar-Quebec, Canada to be precise. My Great-Grandfather is/was Robert Campbell.  He was born in Bonar Village in 1853.  I would be interested in talking to anyone who would have any info regarding him and/or similar interests. Regards,Suzanne DesormeauxDunham (Quebec) Canada

    Hello!
You have a great site. I have enjoyed looking at the pictures and notes.
My great grandparents came from Sutherland County. Their names were John Kerr and Janet (Jessie) Matheson. John's parents are Alexander Kerr and Christina MacLeod. Janet's parent's names were William Matheson and Mary MacLeod. John and Janet moved to Nova Scotia in 1884. If anybody out there has any more information, I would appreciate hearing it. Thank you.

Hello all Sutherlands My great, great, great grandfather moved from Goldspie to Glasgow and then on to Canada in June of 1821.  His name was John Sutherland (born 27 January, 1794) but because he was the second child in the family to have that name he was called "Jock". Jock was married to Isabel Campbell on March 16, 1791 at Shoemaker in Sallachtown, Goldspie Parish and they had five children,  Around 1811 their home was burned down and they relocated to Glasgow where Jock eventually made a good living for his family by carting the freight from ships to warehouses and bringing back freight goods to the ships for export.  Jock became enchanted with stories he heard from ship crews about Canada.  He succumbed eventually and uprooted his family and sailed to Canada landing at Prescott on the St Lawrence in what is now the province of Ontario.  The family trudged from there to Perth in Lanark County and received a parcel of land in that county about 40 miles west of Ottawa. Jock's siblings were John (the first John) born 26 June 1792; Elspet (Elisabeth?) born 3 November, 1797; Donald born 2 October 1802 and William born 30 December, 1807. As far as I can determine the parents of these childdren were James Sutherland who married Isobel Campbell on 16 March, 1791. Other than Jock I have no knowledge about the other brothers and sister.  If anyone thinks he/she  has a possible link to these siblings I would appreciate hearing from you.. Very best wishes to all the Sutherland clan  Gerry Sutherland

Just found this site!  I'm very interested.  I'm trying to research my wife's family history and genealogy for her.  A number of her ancestors are from County Sutherland and I'm not sure how to do a great deal of research there from the USA.  Does anyone know anything about:

    1) Angus (b.1819) and Betsy MacKay, and their daughter, Alexandrina (b.1847).  Angus was supposed to be from Farr.  Alexandrina married an Alexander Campbell, of Edinburgh.  They ended up moving to Thurso, in Caithness, where they both died.
    2) Donald Gow (b.1800) and his wife, Mary MacKay (b.1802), and their son, John Gow (b.abt.1845).  They were from Melness.  Donald's parents were a John Gow and Barbara MacKay, while Mary's were Thomas and Ann MacKay.  Son John Gow died in Melness (d.abt.1938).

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,

    Steven Vance

My ancestors emigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada  from "Doll, Clyne, Brora County" around 1820.
They settled in Laggan near Brora Lake in Pictou County. Father was Donald (wife Margaret Douglas)- sons William, George, Alexander,Robert; daughter Margaret. My fondest wish is to visit Doll and area. I am also descended from Bannerman, MacDonald and MacPherson and have determined that they all come from the Moray- Loch Ness area- within a 50 mile radius of one another.
I would really appreciate knowing if there are Bruces in Doll or area.

My great-grandfather Thomas Munro was born in Strathy, 04. August 1861. His parents were Donald Munro who died abt 1885 and Mary McLeod.

Your website is a treasure! I was just browsing the internet while researching my Sutherland family genealogy. I have been seeking information regarding the Sutherland family for the longest time. In particular, Alexander Sutherland who married Margaret Bryan. Some research states he was born in 1743 but recently found another source that states it was actually 1755. All I really know of him is that he was born in Caithness, Scotland. I was hoping to connect with one of your readers on this site.
You can view my blog here: http://cornettgenealogy.blogspot.com/
It is fairly recent that I started blogging about my trials and tribulations in regards to my families genealogy. Thank you for such an interesting site!

I am researching James Reid (1788) from Little Rogart, Sutherland.  Have been able to contact some members of the family and we are enlarging the family tree.  We would like to contact others who have been researching the Reid name to see if there a familial connection.  I am also looking to  contact Carolyn Potter, USA to discus the photos she has posted on Rogarrt' People.
